Falls Prevention in the Elderly
This is an important topic and one that is very dear to my heart. My dear mother who is still alive at 93 years, has had numerous falls in her life time. So many that we have lost count. Fortunately, she has not broken any bones, nor had any injury. She has had several tests, but her doctor has still not determined the cause of it. A few months ago she tripped on a rug at home and fell on her bottom. She tried desperately to get her self up but could not. She then dragged herself to the phone and called the ambulance. All she wanted was for someone to pick her up, her muscles were not strong enough to get off the floor.
Apparently from the advise I was given, these falls could have been prevented. It is recommenced regular exercise could have prevented this happening in her senior years..
As I am not an expert on this subject and without further ado, let me point you in the right direction. Gabriel Pisanu is a specialist in this field. He works at Optimum Sports Solutions and as a Sports and Exercise Physiologist with all types of athletes and some elderly clients.
I was fortunate to train with Gabe for 2 ½ years. Not only did he train and advise me, but he also taught me about the benefits of exercise in senior years. He explained the various muscles and the exercise that helped strengthen and keep them from wasting away. For anyone seeking advice on exercise, I recommend you consult an experienced Exercise Physiologist. They will make an assessment, and write a special programme that suits you body.
